An outdoor sauna in Denmark – what to know

Building permits, distance to boundaries, foundation and power. The essentials before you order.

Building permits

In most municipalities a free-standing sauna under 10 m² needs no building permit – when it stands without a fixed foundation and at least 2.5 metres from the boundary. The rules are municipal, so call your local technical authority if the placement is close to the line.

Foundation

A barrel sauna can stand on paving or a stable gravel layer. A square sauna sits best on concrete piers or screw piles – it gives air under the floor and keeps the moisture away. We send a concrete recommendation along with the confirmation.

Power

An electric heater of 6–9 kW needs three-phase power (400 V) from the fuse board. It's a job for an authorised electrician and typically costs a few thousand kroner, depending on the distance to the board.

Insurance

Remember to register the sauna with your insurer. Most home-contents policies cover outdoor structures once the value is registered – forget it, and you risk being without cover if something is damaged.

We deliver and install

The sauna itself we deliver and install finished at your home. You provide the base and the power, and we take care of the rest – ready to use by the time we drive off.
